ESI SCHEME IN COIMBATORE SUB REGION
The ESI Scheme was first implemented in the State of Tamil Nadu in Coimbatore and its suburbs on 23rd January, 1955 followed by Chennai and its suburbs in November 1955 and Tirupur in November 1958. The Scheme was slowly and steadily implemented in other industrial centres all over the State over a period of time and by now all important centres where employee population exceed 1000 or more have been covered. Coimbatore is one of the most industrialized cities in Tamil Nadu. It is known as the textile capital of South India or the Manchester of South India. Sub Regional Office, Coimbatore started functioning from January 1990, with its jurisdiction over the District of Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and Nilgiris. 28188 Employers with 7 Lakh Insured persons and nearly 28 lakh beneficiaries are availing Benefits under the ESI Scheme in Coimbatore Sub-Region. The cash benefits are provided through a network of 18 Branch offices of ESI Corporation. The Medical benefits are provided through a network of state government controlled 48 ESI Dispensaries, 2 Mobile Dispensaries and a 500 bedded ESI Medical College Hospital at Varadharajapuram, Singanallur, Coimbatore. MBBS Course is started in 2016 in ESI Medical college and state of the art hospital with all modern facilities for comprehensive medical care for ESI Beneficiaries is expected to roll out in ESI medical college Hospital , Coimbatore in a phased manner shortly. Also, sufficient number of Private Hospitals in Coimbatore Sub-Region have been empanelled by ESI Corporation for providing Super Specialty Treatment facilities on cashless basis.
